Chargers Hold Off Rivier University 67-62

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers women's basketball team picked up a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win on Tuesday defeating Rivier University by a 67-62 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers trailed early by a 4-3 margin before sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) knocked down a triple to spark a 7-0 run to give the home team a 10-4 lead. The Raiders countered with six-straight to tie the game back at 10-10, but another three by sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) kept Colby-Sawyer in front. After another bucket by Rivier the Chargers punched back with a 8-0 run with three pointers by senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) and sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) to give the Chargers a 21-12 edge heading into the second quarter.
  • Colby-Sawyer continued to thrive as Molettieri knocked down another from deep to highlighted another 7-0 run by the home team. The lead blossomed to 35-16 as Holt buried a three, but a 7-0 response by Rivier ended the first half with the Chargers holding a 12 point lead.
  • The Raiders continued to chip away getting the lead down to 35-28, but another three-point response by Molettieri kept the Chargers up double-digits. Rivier battled back getting the deficit down to 42-37 with 4:03 left in the third but a 7-0 counter featuring five points from Holt got the lead back to a dozen. The Raiders responded quickly with five-straight to head into the final frame with the score at 49-42.
  • The lead fell to just three points with 8:56 remaining, but back-to-back layups by sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) and first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) pushed the lead back to seven. Another 8-3 run by Colby-Sawyer finished off by a three by senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) gave the Chargers a 61-51 lead with 5:14 to play. The Raiders weren't finished with a 7-0 run to get the game down to three-points, but a clutch jumper by Brewster and late free-throws helped the home team hold on for the win.
