Chargers Defeat Dean College 56-29

FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team defeated Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Thursday by a final score of 56-29. The Chargers improve their conference record to 3-5 overall with the victory over the Bulldogs.

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers took an early 6-0 lead after sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Brandford, Conn.) and senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) each hit three pointers to open the scoring in the first quarter. Colby-Sawyer continued to build their attack going on a 10-2 run featuring a pair of layups from first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) and triples from senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) and Parent to take a 16-2 advantage. The Bulldogs found their way to the free throw line to make it 16-6, but the Chargers would extend their lead by seven points after Raynowska knocked down her second three pointer in the quarter to go ahead 23-6.
  • Lucertini kicked off the second quarter with a three ball to give the Chargers a 20-point advantage. Carly Rettberg got the Bulldogs into double digits after she scored six consecutive points putting the score at 29-12. Colby-Sawyer continued to pull away from Dean securing the final seven points of the quarter thanks to a good jumper from sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) in the last minute. The Chargers would head into halftime with a 36-12 lead.
  • In the third quarter, the scoring picked up after Caitlin Cooper finished both free throws for the Bulldogs followed by a jumper from Amani Pressley to make it 36-16. Sophomore Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) helped kickstart a 12-4 run for the Chargers after making both of her free throws to give Colby-Sawyer a commanding 48-20 lead going into the final quarter.
  • Sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) hit a pair of jumpers to begin the fourth quarter making it a 32-point deficit for the Bulldogs. Senior Abby Hamelin (Chesterfield, N.H.) scored her first collegiate points as a Charger after stealing the ball and making a fastbreak layup. Colby-Sawyer would defeat Dean by a final score of 56-29.
Player Spotlight:
"It was a very hard-fought game and a good team win," said Molettieri. "Everyone was able to see minutes tonight with scoring all around and would not have been possible without everyone's effort tonight! Time to focus for Lasell on Saturday."

Stats & Figures:
  • Molettieri led the Chargers in scoring with 14 points (5-14 FG, 2-10 3-FG, 2-2 FT) along with an assist and a steal. Mitchell ended the game with 12 points (6-9 FG, 0-1 FT) to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Raynowska scored seven points (2-6 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 1-4 FT) and had four rebounds, an assist, and a block. Lucertini finished with six points (2-4 FG, 2-4 3-FG) and five rebounds for the Chargers.
  • Rettberg led the Bulldogs with 13 points (4-8 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 4-6 FT) along with five rebounds, two assists, and a steal. 
  • The Chargers shot 36.8% from the field in comparison to the Bulldogs 16.7%. Colby-Sawyer converted 17 points from turnovers and had an 7-4 advantage in steals over Dean.
