Sorenson's Overtime Game-Winner Propels Chargers Past Plymouth State

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Senior Calie Sorenson (Sandwich, Mass.) scored in overtime to lift the Colby-Sawyer Chargers past the Plymouth State University Panthers by a 4-3 final in overtime.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers got on the board first as senior Aoife Daly (Harwich, N.H.) found the back of the cage off a feed from junior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) on the first penalty corner of the season. Plymouth State tried to respond at the end of the first quarter shooting off three shots on target, which were all denied by senior Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.)
  • The Panthers responded in the second quarter drawing a penalty stroke attempt with Taylor Healey finishing it off the pad of a diving Wilkinson. Both teams would continue to fire off shots, but none would find the back of the cage before the break.
  • In the third the Chargers took the lead once more as Daly finished a feed from sophomore Courtney Larson (Auburn, Maine) for her second goal of the season. The Panthers answered back just 32 seconds later as Savannah Connor beat Wilkinson on a setup by Jenna Stowell to even the game at 2-2 heading into the fourth.
  • In the fourth both teams went back and forth with scoring opportunities until first year Taylor Gaudette (North Conway, N.H.) finished her first collegiate goal securing a high pass from Larson and pushing it past the Panther goalie with just over five minutes remaining. Plymouth State answered again with Caroline Coleman finishing a long pass from Athena Comeau to even the game at 3-3.
  • In the overtime period, a Wilkinson save brought the Chargers in transition where Daly tossed the ball across the goalie to find a diving Sorenson for the game-winner.
Coaches Corner:

"The team showed tenacity and grit today",said head coach Emily Dewdney. "I am proud that I get to be their coach. We can celebrate the win today and tomorrow we are back to work."

Player Spotlight:

"It felt awesome to come out here and pickup the win", said senior Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.). We wanted to pick up right where we left off last year and we really worked hard in the off season. Everyone came in great condition and we were ready to go when that overtime bell hit. I'm really happy, we have a lot of first years that came in and played well so it has been a great start to the season so far with the big win."

Notes & Notables:
  • Daly finished the game with five points with two goals and an assist to lead the offense, while Gaudette and Sorenson each added a goal of their own.
  • Larson dished out a career-high two assists, while Murph added the other assist.
  • Senior Jordan Pollard (Newbury, N.H.) recorded a big defensive save in the fourth quarter getting in front of a shot.
  • Wilkinson picks up the win with nine saves in the cage for Colby-Sawyer.
  • With the five points Daly moves into fifth all-time in points, while also tying assistant coach Julia Lanctot in career goals for third in program history. Wilkinson's nine saves pushes her into third place in program history with saves.
