NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers field hockey team dropped its first game in two weeks on Wednesday losing to Fitchburg State University by a 2-0 final.
Rapid Recap:
- In the first eight minutes the Falcons launched four shots at senior Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.) who turned them away easily. Fitchburg had another big chance in the ninth minute but junior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) stepped in for her second defensive save of the season. Colby-Sawyer tried to counter, but no team would score in the first. Fitchburg State got on the board early in the second as Grace Kerr beat Wilkinson on a feed from Riley O'Brien. The Chargers got their first big opportunity in the 25th minute as first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) got a shot off that was stopped. Colby-Sawyer continued to attack, but no goals would be scored before halftime.
- In the third quarter the Chargers started firing with senior Calie Sorenson getting a big opportunity but Falcons keeper Jenna Morse stood tall blocking the shot away. Fitchburg took the game back over drawing a couple penalty corners and after a defensive save by senior Jordan Pollard (Newbury, N.H.) the Falcons scored again with Lena Kassel firing one high into the cage. Senior Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.) tried to answer in the final minute of the third quarter but the stop was deflected away by Morse. Both teams traded opportunities in the fourth quarter, but neither team managed a goal.
Notes & Notables:
- The Chargers were out shot by Fitchburg 18-14 with a 15-7 shot on goal differential.
- Both Murph and Pollard pick up their second defensive save of the season for the Chargers.
- Wilkinson drops her second game of the year with 11 saves in the cage.
