Chargers Win First GNAC Match Against Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team defeated Anna Maria College to earn their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season. The Chargers 4-0 victory improves their overall record to 1-3-1 and conference record 1-0.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers were able to break through in the 35th minute after applying pressure to the Amcats backline. Sophomore Halle Pletzer (Barre, VT.) scored off an assist from junior Kara Keiper (Peterborough, N.H.) to give Colby-Sawyer the 1-0 led heading to halftime.
  • Sophomore Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.) wasted no time finding the back of the net to give the Chargers a 2-0 advantage early in the second half.
  • Senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) notched her first goal of the season in the 77th minute off a pass from O'Connell to lengthen the led 3-0. In the final minutes of the match, Keiper found O'Connell who recorded her second goal of the evening to end the score at 4-0.
Player Spotlight:
"I am extremely proud of this team," said senior captain Thea Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.).

"We worked well together especially in the second half. It was a great GNAC win that we needed. There is a lot more work to be done and a lot more success on the way!"

Coaches Corner:
"It was nice to get this first win and having it be a conference game makes it more important," said head coach Anthony Cosky. "I thought Anna Maria did a great job in the first half by not allowing us time and space on the ball. It made it tough for us to keep possession. I thought our team really competed and played a smarter second half. We moved the ball well and created more chances and possessed it better. It was also nice to put some goals in and we scored some good ones.

We have three-games next week including a tough match on Saturday against Albertus Magnus. I think it'll be nice to play a couple mid-week games versus Salem State and Northern Vermont University - Johnson. Most importantly we play our next five games on our home field, so it'll be good for our players to take a break from the travel and hopefully it'll show in our performance these next couple weeks at home."
