NEW LONDON, N.H. – On Saturday, April 2
nd, the Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball program celebrated their two seniors by hosting a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match featuring the Lasers of Lasell University, the Saints of Emmanuel College and the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College.
Overview:
The Chargers dropped both matches on the day with a 3-1 finish against Lasell and a 3-0 final with the Saints. Senior
Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) and graduate student
Andrew Kovacs (Wellesley, Mass.) were honored for their senior day during the Emmanuel match in which both members of the men's volleyball team were announced and given gifts from the team to thank them for their time as Chargers.
Game 1: (LU: 3 CSC: 1)
- The first set saw the Chargers take an early 5-2 lead over the Lasers sparked by a three-point run including a kill from both Miller and Kovacs. Then, another four -point run by Colby-Sawyer would extend the Charger lead to 10-4. Tied at 24 and needing to win by two, the Chargers quickly sealed the deal with back-to-back kills from first-year Christopher Huynh (Methuen, Mass.) and Miller to take set one 26-24.
- The Lasers pounced on the Chargers early in the second, putting up a quick 10 points to the Colby-Sawyer's one. A kill from the hands of senior Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) with help from first-year Lucas Lizotte (Hampstead, N.H.) interrupted the 10-point run. Lasell University held the lead the full way through taking set two 25-16.
- Plagata came full force for the third set opening with two back-to-back kills with helpers from Lizotte tp place the Chargers at 2-0 over Lasell. A six-point run would make the difference for the Chargers as the Lasers took back their lead and kept it for the remainder of the day, taking the set 25-15.
- Tied at 10 halfway through the fourth set, another stretch of Laser kills would put the Lasers ahead of the Chargers by five. The rest of the set saw the Chargers reach 15 by the time Lasell reached 25, taking the fourth and final set.
Game 2: (EC: 3 CSC:0)
- Tied at eleven in the first set of the second match for the Chargers, the Emmanuel Saints went for a four-point run to take the 15-11 lead. The tail end of the set featured four Charger kills and a serving ace from Plagata. Despite their efforts, the Chargers fell to the Saints in set one, 25-18.
- The second set consisted of a lot of back-n-forth as both teams slowly inched their way towards 25. With the score knotted at eight, the Saints gripped the lead and took set two with a final score of 25-18.
- In set three of match two, the Colby-Sawyer Chargers gave it their all in their last home game of the season, dropping 25-20. Despite the score, the men fought to the very end, coming back from an eight-point deficit to drop the final set by five.
Notes & Notables:
- Leading the offense with a total of 26 kills on the day was Plagata who also collected 17 digs. Miller followed with 14 total kills and Kovacs with 10.
- The men finish their 2022 season with an overall record of 4-17 and a conference record of 1-12, taking a GNAC victory over the Bulldogs of Dean College.
