Chargers Continue Winning-Streak in 15-12 Victory Over Fitchburg State University

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team were finally back in front of the home crowd on Saturday, putting on a show in a 15-12 victory over Fitchburg State University. The Chargers' hot start continues as the Chargers are now 3-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2017 season. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Chargers jumped on top 1-0 early as senior Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass.) deposited her seventh goal of the season only a minute and 17 seconds into the contest. After the Falcons responded junior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) finished home her first of the day to give the Chargers a 2-1 advantage. Fitchburg State answered yet again scoring two goals to get their first lead of the game. The home team ended the first quarter strong scoring the final three goals and taking 5-3 lead into the break. First year Heather Hanson (Marston Mills, Mass.), sophomore Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) and junior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) each added their first scores of the day.
  • The second quarter started similar to how the first quarter ended as Marquis beat the Falcon goalie for her second goal of the day. Stevens responded with her second score of the day following a goal from the Falcons to keep the lead at 7-4. Fitchburg answered with their best run of the day netting back to back goals to get the game within a single score, but with two seconds on the clock Marquis beat the defender and then keeper to net the first half hat trick to give Colby-Sawyer a 8-6 lead heading into the break.
  • Marquis led the Chargers once again in the second half receiving an assist from Hanson to score her fourth of the day. At the 7:11 mark of the Falcons got their first goal of the half as Delaney Ponder beat first year AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) for the second time. The Chargers responded in a big way scoring the next four goals in 1:16 of game action. Stevens kick-started the run scoring back-to-back goals before Tompkins responded with a pair of goals on her own giving Colby-Sawyer a 13-7 lead. Fitchburg ended the quarter with a goal of their own, but faced an uphill battle heading into the fourth quarter. 
  • Stevens began the fourth 43 seconds in netting her career-high fifth goal of the day pushing the lead back to a six goal margin. The Falcons countered with their biggest run of the day putting home the next four goals and with only 3:49 left, Fitchburg only trailed by a pair of scores. 13 seconds later the dagger was finished home by Hanson who controlled the draw and sprinted to the net to score her second goal of the day. The Chargers defense held on after a pair of saves from Paton to seal the third-straight win.


Player Spotlight:

"It was very exciting to be back on our home turf and even more exciting to walk away with a win", said junior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.)."We all worked together as a team and it led to our success."

Notes & Notables:
  • Stevens led the offense tallying five goals on 11 shots. Stevens also grabbed her second assist of the year, while also collecting six ground balls. Hanson continues to impress with a pair of goals on five shots, while dishing out a career-high five assists. Marquis registered four key goals to go along with five ground balls. Tompkins added a hat trick.
  • First year Emma Webster (Campton, N.H.) led the defensive effort for Colby-Sawyer causing a career-high four turnovers and picking up a team-high seven ground balls. 
  • Paton continues her success in the cage with another 11 saves in her third-consecutive win. 
  • Julia Miele led the Falcons scoring four goals with a pair of assists, while Francesca Reyes had a big game in net with 17 saves in the loss.

The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team head back on the road to take on Castleton University at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, March 9th.
