MILTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers were victorious in their season-opener on Wednesday defeating the Curry College Colonels by a 17-11 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers took the opening draw and scored in the first 35 seconds as junior Madison Gaskell (Pembroke, N.H.) found a pass from sophomore Oliva Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) and placed the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the season.
- The Chargers would add onto the lead tacking the next three scores as junior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.), sophomore Ella Lyford (Orange, Vt.) and first year Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) each finished home their first goal of the season.
- The Colonels countered scoring a goal at the end of the first quarter and added the first two of the second quarter. The Chargers answered back as first year Heather Hanson (Marston Mills, Mass.) tallied back-to-back goals to put the visitors up 6-3.
- Curry College added another pair of goals, before Colby-Sawyer finished off the half with three-straight goals as Marquis, Lyford and Kuhlthau each put home their second goal of the game.
- Kuhlthau, Hanson and Marquis each scored their third goals of the game in the third putting the Chargers up 12-7. Curry answered with a single goal before Colby-Sawyer charged ahead with three more scores as Romo tabbed her first goal and Hanson notched her fourth and fifth of the game.
- Senior Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass.) added herself to the score sheet in the fourth scoring the final two goals for the Chargers on free positions putting the game out of reach for the 17-11 win.
Player Spotlight:
"It was so exciting to be back on the field", said junior
Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.). "This is all but two players on our team's first collegiate season because of COVID-19. Our team is ready to jump back into a full season. It was so motivating to start off the season with a win!"
Notes & Notables:
- Hanson led the offense scoring five goals and an assist. Kuhlthau and Marquis each added three goals of their own, with Kuhlthau forcing five turnovers. Lyford and Tompkins each tallied a pair of scores, while Gaskell and Romo each added one of their own. Romo was also the assist leader for Colby-Sawyer dishing out three assists in the victory.
- First year goalie AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up her first collegiate win with seven saves in the full 60:00.

The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team finish their brief road trip on March 2nd, when the team heads to Newton, Mass. to face Lasell University in the first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game of the season.
