2022-23 Indoor Track & Field Season Preview

Story By: Bella Silva

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer indoor track & field team are eager for the 2022-23 season to get underway.

STARTING STRONG
The Chargers men's team will look to continue a strong presence in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) after a second-place finish at the conference championship last season. The women are also eager to kick start the new year after capturing fourth place during last year's championship. At the end of the 2021-22 season, both the men and women combined for a total of 69 personal records and four total broken school records.

"We're feeling very excited coming into the indoor season," said head coach O'Connell. "We just wrapped up a successful fall and indoor brings a whole new flair to it. We get to involve our sprinters, jumpers, throwers, and hurdlers so the team becomes a lot bigger which makes it a lot more fun. We're really looking forward to getting the season going.

We have great leaders on this team. We were a super young team the past couple years, but now many of our athletes are upperclassmen and we have outstanding leaders on all event groups. This is one of the best groups I've been around in terms of people supporting each other and their goals."

THE CAPTAINS:
Senior Dean Miller (Andover, Mass.) will lead the men's team for the upcoming indoor season.

Miller had a successful junior season for the Chargers after ending the year with seven top-three finishes. He also made his mark on the record-book as a member of the 4x400 meter relay on February 13th in the GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championship with a time of 3:36.92.

"Expectations for indoor is to win a GNAC championship," said the senior captain. "We finished second last year. We want to finish on top and keep rolling into the spring season. Team dynamic is great, everyone is relaxed and wants to work hard. We know when to have fun and when to put our heads down and get to work."

The women will be led by junior Faith Mazzapica (Tewksbury, Mass.) who is majoring in psychology.

"I'm super excited for this season," said Mazzapica. "We have the whole team coming back together, going out for our first meet looking to get some personal records and marks and hopefully coming out with good scores in the GNAC. Our team dynamic is great, I think most of us have been together for the past two years and have grown up through doing track."

NEW ADDITIONS:
Coach O'Connell welcomes multiple first years for both squads with a few returners from the cross-country team.

On the men's side, first year's Deaunte Barton, John Davis, Kyle Gassiraro, Michael Gordon, and Patrick Murphy will join the team.

On the women's team, the Chargers will have five new members added to the team including Kate Cochran, Julia Huckins, Molly MacklinEmma Mullen, and Adriana Nadeau.

WHAT TO KNOW:
The Chargers have a total of six regular season meets in the indoor season, which will start on December 10that Plymouth State University.
