BOSTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to Emmanuel College 68-45 during their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match up on Wednesday evening. The Chargers drop to 0-2 in conference play while the Saints earn their first GNAC win to improve their conference record to 1-1.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers started off hot in the first quarter with a three pointer from sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) to get the Chargers on the scoreboard. Senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) clutched a rebound off the missed shot from Cait Barker which led to first-year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) securing a layup to go up 5-0. Colby-Sawyer continued to build their advantage after Parent hit a three-ball to make it 8-2. The Saints took a 13-10 lead thanks to Allison Wild making back-to-back buckets. Sophomore Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) tied the game at 13-13 after finishing an and-one layup. Emmanuel would go on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter with a 22-14 advantage.
- In the second quarter, the Saints extended their lead by 15 points which started from a Kiera Eubanks layup. The Chargers refocused and struck back with two made free throws from Mitchell and a jump shot in the paint by sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) but Emmanuel would hold a 41-21 lead heading into halftime.
- After Olivia Matela opened the third quarter with a made jumper, Holt responded by making a layup. The Chargers put some pressure on the Saints attack with Parent stealing the ball from Eubanks and Mitchell denying Wild a layup with a block. Senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) knocked down a triple in the last minute of the quarter however Emmanuel would hold their lead at 49-30.
- The Saints secured six early points in the fourth quarter to make it 55-30. Colby-Sawyer went on a 7-2 run kicked started by a three-ball from Parent and another three pointer and free throw from Raynowska to put the score at 57-37. The Chargers continued to battle as the quarter came to an end with sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) finishing two layups and a free throw but the Saints would secure the victory with a 68-45 final score.
Notes & Notables:
- Holt led the Chargers in scoring with 10 points (3-8 FG, 4-5 FT) along with one rebound and two assists. Molettieri ended the game with nine points (3-8 FG, 1-4 3-FG, 2-3 FT) while securing two rebounds. On the defensive end, Raynowska recorded two steals, one defensive rebound, a block while also scoring eight points for Colby-Sawyer.
- Matela scored 16 points (7-13 FG, 2-5 3-FG) for the Saints to go along with three rebounds, one assist, and a steal. Shakirah Ketant ended the night with 10 points (4-5 FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, one assist, and a steal.
- The Chargers shot 31.1% from the field while shooting 28.6% from behind of the arc. Colby-Sawyer grabbed 14 points from the paint and went 11-15 for free throws.
