STANDISH, Maine – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest against Saint Joseph's College of Maine 72-32 on Saturday afternoon.
Rapid Recap:
- Sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) finished a layup to get the Chargers on the scoreboard in the first quarter. Angelica Hurley completed both free throws to tie it at 2-2 after senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) committed the foul. A layup from Jayne Howe and a made free throw from Hannah Talon gave the Monks a 5-2 advantage. Tied at 5-5 after Parent went 1-2 at the free throw line, Hurley would make a three-point shot to give the Monks an 8-5 led. Parent responded with her first three-ball of the game to put the Chargers back up 10-8, but the Monks would regain the led after making two late three pointers to end the first quarter at 14-10.
- Parent started the second quarter strong for the Chargers after draining another triple to make it 14-13. Saint Joseph's would then go on a 7-0 run highlighted by Talon with an assist and layup to go ahead 21-13. After Parent finished both of her free throws, the Monks attack gained momentum going on a 13-2 run to put them up 34-19 heading into halftime.
- The Monks started the third quarter by scoring the opening 15 points to extend their lead to 49-19. Sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) finished a layup off the assist from first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) to get the Chargers on the scoreboard. Saint Joseph's would head into the final quarter of the game with a 57-27 advantage.
- In the fourth quarter, the Monks offensive generated an 8-1 run after Maddie Lebel hit a three-pointer assisted by Talon. With three seconds remaining in the game, sophomore Natalie Panagrosso (Wallingford, Conn.) made an easy bucket, but the Monks would get the win with a 72-32 final.
Notes & Notables:
- Parent led the Chargers in scoring with 12 points (2-6 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 6-8 FT) along with three rebounds and a steal. Brewster finished the game with eight points (3-11 FG, 2-4 FT) while recording 10 rebounds and two steals. Panagrosso and Raynowska each scored four points apiece for the Chargers.
- Talon scored 18 points (7-9 FG, 3-5 3-FG, 1-2 FT) for the Monks to go along with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Nina Howe ended the game with 12 points (5-9 FG, 2-4 3-FG), four rebounds, eight assists, and eight steals.
- The Chargers finished the game making 16 points in the paint while shooting 71.4% from the free throw line.
