CASTLETON, Vt. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to Castleton University 62-43 on Wednesday night. The Chargers drop to 2-4 on the season while the Spartans improve to a 5-2 record.
Rapid Recap:
- The Spartans took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter after a made jumper by Elise Magro. Sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) hit back-to-back three pointers to get the Chargers on the scoreboard to make it 11-6. Castleton extended their lead by 11 points after Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) fouled Gwyn Tatton who finished both of her free throws. Brewster tallied her first points of the game after making one free throw and a layup to keep the Chargers within striking distance. Sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) joined in on the scoring with a jumper followed by a three pointer off the assist from first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) to end the first quarter with the Spartans up 19-14.
- In the second quarter, senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) completed two free throws that was started by a steal from senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) to shrink Castleton's led to 19-16. After the Spartans went on the attack to go ahead 24-16, Holt responded with a bucket and Brewster followed with a three-ball assisted by sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) to make it 26-21. A three pointer from Luna Perry-St. Peter gave Castleton a 10 point advantage. Parent drained her first triple of the night, but the Spartans would head into halftime with a 33-24 lead.
- Castleton opened the third quarter by going on a 7-0 run that began with a three pointer from Tatton to extend the Spartans led to 40-24. Molettieri finished a three pointer off an assist by Mitchell who made a jumper shortly after to make it 43-31. The Spartans continued to build their attack going on a 11-2 run to end the third quarter at 54-33.
- A layup from Kelly Vuz started the scoring in the final quarter of the game. The Chargers continued to battle as Mitchell finished a couple buckets and Parent knocked down a triple to make it 56-40. Colby-Sawyer were able to hold Castleton to just eight points throughout the fourth quarter but the Spartans would earn the victory with a final score of 62-43.
Notes & Notables:
- Brewster led the Chargers in scoring with 11 points (4-9 FG, 1-3 3-FG, 2-5 FT) along with eight rebounds. Parent ended the night with eight points (2-7 FG, 2-6 3-FG, 2-2 FT) while recording three rebounds and two assists. Holt and Molettieri also finished with eight points apiece. On the defensive end, Mitchell tallied nine rebounds with Raynowska and Lucertini both recording a steal.
- Magro scored 17 points (7-16 FG, 0-3 3-FG, 3-5 FT) for the Spartans to go along with four rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Vuz ended the game with 13 points (6-10 FG, 1-3 3-FG, 0-2 FT), six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- The Chargers ended the night with 20 bench points and eight points in the paint, while shooting 28.8% from the field.
