BOSTON, Mass.– The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to the University of Massachusetts – Boston 59-41 on Tuesday night. The Chargers are now 1-1 on the season with the loss to the Beacons.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers were first to get on the score sheet with senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) making both free throws. The Beacons pulled away with a 10-4 led towards the end of the first quarter but the Chargers went on an 8-0 run that was started by first year Elyza Mitchell making two free throws and ended with Mitchell getting a layup to go up 12-10. A jumper from sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) would give Colby-Sawyer the 15-12 led heading into the second quarter.
- After the Beacons took a 17-15 advantage early in the second quarter, Mitchell would tie it up with a driving layup. UMass Boston would head into halftime with a 27-22 led after Keriann Farina made a buzzer beating half-court shot.
- The Beacons came out strong in the third quarter and extended their lead by 15-points to make it 37-22. Colby-Sawyer responded by putting up nine consecutive points kicked off from a three-pointer made by sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, VT.) and ended with a couple made free throws by Mitchell to shrink UMass Boston's advantage to 37-31. The Beacons would finish the quarter ahead 43-31.
- Back-to-back three pointers made by sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) helped keep the score close at 47-37 in the final quarter of the game. UMass Boston would double their lead to 57-37 after a layup by Farina. Senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) drained a three-point shot and made one of two free throws to end the game with a 59-41 final.
Notes & Notables:
- Mitchell led the team in scoring with 15 points (5-10 FG, 5-7 FT), while also making eight rebounds. Holt tallied eight points (3-6 FG, 2-3 3-PT) to go along with six rebounds and one assist. Moletierri scored seven points (3-7 FG, 1-4 3-PT, 0-2 FT) and made five rebounds for the Chargers.
- Farina led the Beacons in scoring with 16 points along with 2 rebounds while Sunny Green ended the night with 15 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
- The Chargers shot 38.5% (5-13) from deep while out-rebounding the Beacons by a 43-34 margin. Colby-Sawyer finished the night shooting 34.1% (14-41) from the field, 16 points in the paint and 28 bench points.
