Chargers Fall at the Buzzer to Curry College

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers women's basketball team fell on Saturday dropping a contest to Curry College by a 57-56 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • Colby-Sawyer jumped ahead early with an 8-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) and finished off with a layup by junior Grace Lister (Milford, N.H.). Another finish in the paint by Lister pushed the lead to 10-1 with 5:33 to go in the first quarter. A 12-3 counter by the Colonels tied the game at 13-13 by the end of the first quarter.
  • Curry College continued its run taking a 19-13 lead halted by a layup by first year Elyza Mitchell's (Spofford, N.H.). The lead grew to 12 as the Colonels continued to score, but a key three from senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) sparked a closing 12-2 run ended with a trifecta by sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) cut the deficit to 29-27 headed into halftime.
  • The Chargers tied the game up with 7:25 to go in the third quarter as sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) finished a tough layup after a beautiful assist by senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.). Colby-Sawyer got the lead back the next possession as Parent swished home a deep three. Curry College countered to take the 38-37 lead, but Parent hit another from downtown to give the Chargers a 40-38 lead heading into the final frame.
  • Both teams traded buckets early in the fourth but after a driving layup by Parent the lead grew to 46-43 in favor of the home team. A 6-0 counter by the Colonels put the visitors back in front with 4:14 to go. Raynowska picked up a fancy finish under the basket to cut the Curry lead to just a single point where the lead would hold until the 1:06 mark when a pair of free throws by Holt knotted the game at 53-53. After teams traded free throws the Chargers picked up a huge defensive stop and with 30 seconds left Mitchell split free throws to give Colby-Sawyer a 56-55 lead. The Chargers forced a turnover, but after a controversial no call the Colonels finished home a layup to close out with the 57-56 win.
