Rapid Recap:
- The Saints came out strong to start the first half with Melissa McMillen forcing an early save from senior goalkeeper Alexis LeBreton (Bangor, Maine). The Chargers responded by pushing their attack in the 10th minute with a shot from junior Kara Keiper (Peterborough, N.H.). Sophomore Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Thea Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) each recorded a shot on target that the Saints goalkeeper Sandra Griffith was able to save. The first half continued to have action on both ends of the field, but the score would remain tied at 0-0 heading into halftime.
- In the second half, Emmanuel applied pressure to Colby-Sawyer's backline with Brooklynn Ortiz testing LeBreton with an early shot on net. After Morgan Fisher received a yellow card in the 68th minute, the Chargers started to build their attack.
- In the 80th minute, O'Connell had a chance to break the score drought after firing a shot that was deflected off a Saints defender, but Griffith would deny O'Connell the goal scoring opportunity. Emmanuel was able to earn three corner kicks in the final minute of the match however the Saints couldn't capitalize on their chances, ending the game with a 0-0 final.
Player Spotlight:
"I am so proud of our performance today," said senior captain Alberti. "We worked hard for all ninety minutes and didn't let any goals in. This season has been unpredictable and I'm so happy with our outcomes thus far. We really wanted to secure a spot in the playoffs and perform well. Now we focus on our next match on Wednesday at home!"
Coach's Corner:
"I'm really proud of how our team competed today against a quality side," said head coach Anthony Coksy. "I thought we had the better opportunities and were unlucky to not put any goals in. Emmanuel did a god job possessing the ball and moving it better than we did, but I thought we defended very well and disrupted their rhythm. We gave up 11 corners which is too many, but on the plus side we didn't let them finish any goals. Our whole team worked extremely hard at a high rate and deserved this result.
We clinched a spot in the playoffs for the first time since joining the GNAC. We are looking forward to playing Saint Joseph's College of Maine on our home field this coming Wednesday and finishing the regular season off well. I'm really happy for this team, but we have more work to do and believe we can play with anyone in this conference."
Stats & Figures:
- O'Connell finished the match with three of her four shots on target. Senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) and junior Sam Bishop (Windham, N.H.) each took two shots apiece while senior Grace Walsh (Marston Mills, Mass.), Keiper, and Alberti all recorded one shot.
- LeBreton secured their eighth clean sheet of the season after making eight saves.
- The Chargers were outshot by the Saints 14-11 with Emmanuel holding an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
