Track and Field Competes in Peter Slovenski Invitational

BRUNSWICK, MAINE - The Colby-Sawyer men's and women's indoor track and field team traveled to Brunswick, Maine, to compete in the Peter Slovenski Invitational hosted by the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College. 
 
OVERVIEW:
 
The Peter Slovenski Invitational took place at the Farley Field House. It consisted of six teams, including Bowdoin College, the University of Maine-Farmington, Connecticut College, Thomas College, the University of Maine- Fort Kent, and Colby-Sawyer College. The Colby-Sawyer men's team recorded 69 points to earn the number four spot, with the women scoring 54 to place fifth. 

MEN'S:

This week, nine total Chargers on the men's team placed in the top three positions in their respected events. 
 
First-year Hayden Goyette collected both an individual victory and a new career personal record (PR) in the 600-meter race, finishing 2.94 seconds faster than his previous time of 1:36.94 set on January 8th, 2022, at the University of Southern Maine meet. Goyette was the lone victor for the Chargers during the meet. 
 
Senior captain Jacob Nichol earned the number two spot out of five in the 400-meter race with a final time of 58.79. The relay team of seniors Spencer McClary and Brendan Sullivan, along with first-year Martin Steucek and junior Tristan McNight, finished in second place during the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:45.63. 
 
Sophomore Jordan Piechowski competed in the 600-meter race for the first time in his college career, earning third place with a final time of 1:41.00. First-year Daniel Castriotta finished the 800-meter race in 2:20.77, receiving third place of five. 
 
First-year Dylan Flewelling also recorded a personal best during the Peter Slovenski Invitational. The rookie finished over 13 seconds faster than in the previous meet a week before in the 3000-meter race. 
 
OTHER PR'S!
 
Junior captain Dean Miller set three personal records during this meet. First, in the 60-meter dash, Miller finished with a 7.41 time, defeating his previous PR of 7.78, which was set back in 2020 during the Mary Grinaker Invitational. Next, his second personal record was collected in the 200-meter race, where he completed the race in 24.31. Miller's previous personal best was in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship in 2020. Lastly, Miller participated in the indoor long jump, overcoming his previous PR of 5.10m set the week before, this time with a distance of 5.55m. 
First-year Alexander Tirado received a personal record in the shot-put event, throwing 10.05m. Tirado threw for 9.48m the week before in the University of Southern Maine Invitational. 
 
WOMEN'S: 

Five total Chargers placed third or higher on the women's side in their events. 

During the 600-meter race, first-year Heather Hanson took the cake, finishing at 1:45.53. Fellow first year and cross-country teammate Samantha Carus also took a victory in her individual event, completing the 3000-meter race almost 12 seconds faster than her trailing competitor. In addition, Carus set a new personal record, beating her previous time of 11:32.82 set a week prior, this time with a final time of 11:24.23. 
 
The Chargers ended the day with another first-place spot as the team of Hanson, junior Grace Walsh, and first-years Bridget O'Connell and Hannah Brown successfully finished the 4 x 400 relay race over eight seconds before their opponents. 
 
OTHER PR'S!
 
Anna Bieszczad recorded a new personal best in the 200-meter race with a final time of 31.74, passing her previously set record of 31.96.

On Friday, January 21st, the men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Norton, Massachusetts, to compete in the Wheaton College Invitational.
