Chargers Cruise to 19-9 Win at Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. - March 4, 2020 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team defeated Castleton, 19-9, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. 

The win is the first against Castleton since 2008 as the Spartans won the previous 13 meetings. Colby-Sawyer (2-0) begins conference action on Saturday at Lasell. Castleton dips to 1-2. 

Briana Couture racked up a game-high seven goals, but was followed closely by Sarah Morin's six scores and one assist as both Chargers totaled seven points. Caroline Tompkins and Hannah Marquis scored twice, while Jaime Wood had a pair of assists for Colby-Sawyer. Jess Tattersall was strong on defense, picking up three ground balls, five draw controls and four caused turnovers. Kailyn Lapham moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time wins list with 22. She made six saves on the night.

Erin Shuttle led Castleton with four goals to go with a game-high eight draw controls and three caused turnovers. Morgan Derosia added three scores and seven draw controls for Castleton. Raven Payne suffered the loss in goal, making 13 saves in the contest.

The Chargers ran out to a 4-0 lead eight minutes into the contest, but Castleton rattled off a pair of goals following a timeout.

Colby-Sawyer responded with five consecutive scores to build a comfortable 9-2 lead. The teams traded goals in the final eight minutes of the half as the Chargers took an 11-5 advantage into the break. 

The visitors pushed its lead to 15-5 with four goals to begin the second half, two off the stick off Couture. Two more goals by Couture, later in the frame, gave Colby-Sawyer a 17-6 lead. Castleton then scored the next three goals to make the margin 17-9, but Grace Vosburgh and Hannah Marquis closed the scoring for the Chargers to send Colby-Sawyer home a 19-9 winner. 

Colby-Sawyer held a 39-26 edge in shots, 31-18 edge in ground balls and went 13-for-23 on the clear. Castleton was just 5-of-17 clearing the ball and committed 27 turnovers in the contest. The Spartans won 20 of the game's 30 draw controls.
