WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - February 22, 2020 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell to 19th-ranked University of Saint Joseph, 93-76, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season finale for both teams.
Saint Joseph pushes its win streak to 22 in a row to improve to 23-2 overall and finish the conference slate undefeated at 11-0. Colby-Sawyer ends its season at 10-15 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
Sophomore point guard Jaecee Martin (Hartford, Conn.) and junior forward Jordan Powell (Middletown, Conn.) led the way for the Blue Jays with double-doubles. Martin finished with 14 points, 12 assists and five rebounds. Powell scored a game best 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
The Chargers were led by senior center
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.). He ended his collegiate career in grand fashion with 25 points on 12-of-19 shooting and nine rebounds. Freshman
Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) poured in 14 points, while senior
Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) contributed 12 points, six assists and five rebounds. Freshman
Jake Lorman (Rutland, Vt.) rounded out four Chargers in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore
Terrence Harvey Jr. (Smyrna, Ga.) added nine points and nine assists.
Colby-Sawyer looked to be the sharper team early, taking a 21-11 lead with 13:03 to go in the first. Bean was sensational in the post, not allowing the Blue Jay bigs to dictate his spot on the floor.
Colby-Sawyer utilized a 2-2-1 full-court press and a 1-3-1 half-court pressure defense to force 11 early Blue Jay turnovers. It kept the Chargers in the fight, and at the half, Bean hit a buzzer-beating putback to make it a one-point game, 40-39 at the break.
The Blue Jays found the rhythm in the second half and used a 20-10 run midway through the second half to take control of the contest. They later added a 14-4 spurt to increase the margin en route to the comfortable victory.
Saint Joseph shot 54.8% from the floor, while Colby-Sawyer was at 41%. The Blue Jays also had a 19-8 edge in made free throws.
