Chargers Come Up Short at NEC, 95-90

HENNIKER, N.H. - January 13, 2020 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team was outlasted by New England College, 95-90, on Monday evening. 

NEC improves to 9-5. Colby-Sawyer dips to 6-6. The Chargers will play one more non-conference game on Wednesday at home against the University of New England before beginning GNAC action at Albertus Magnus on Saturday. 

Senior Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) led Colby-Sawyer with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. He moved into 11th on the all-time scoring list with 1,372 points. He also climbed to eighth in field goals made with 549. Senior Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) added 17 points and a team best eight boards. First-year Kyle Landrigan (Madbury, N.H.) was 7-of-8 from the floor to score a career best 15 points in 18 minutes. Sophomore Terrence Harvey Jr. (Smyrna, Ga.) tallied a career-high nine assists. 

NEC was paced by Jamal Allen's 28 points. Larry McKinney notched a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Calvin Cheek filled the stat sheet with eight points, nine assists and seven rebounds. 

The first half was played back and forth in the first several minutes and was tied at 20-20. Colby-Sawyer then used a 9-2 run to take a 29-22 lead midway through the frame. The Chargers kept up the pressure and held a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the half. Colby-Sawyer took a 49-42 advantage into the break thanks to 68.8% shooting from the floor. Bean and Landrigan each had 10 points. 
 
The visitors pushed the lead to 12 after a Landrigan trey at 14:50 and then a Coffey deep ball gave Colby-Sawyer a 15-point edge (71-56) with 12:21 showing on the clock. NEC would not go quietly and slowly chipped away. The Pilgrims later used a 14-0 run to take an 88-84 with 2:21 left to play. A Coffey three cut the Chargers deficit to 91-89  with 1:14 on the clock, but NEC secured the 95-90 win with free throws down the stretch.
