NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 4, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team was defeated by Fitchburg State, 4-2, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. The game was delayed an hour due to lightning.
Fitchburg State improves to 1-1 and will travel to Roger Williams on Saturday at 1 p.m. Colby-Sawyer drops to 1-1 and will host Plymouth State on Saturday at noon.
Colby-Sawyer opened the scoring in the first quarter when senior

In the second quarter, the Falcons found the offense and scored twice. After Fitchburg State was awarded a penalty corner, Nicole Tocco (Gloucester, Mass.) notched her first goal of the season off assists from Lena Spadafore (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Sophia Morse (West Bridgewater, Mass.). With less than two minutes to play in the half, Sarah Craig (Winchendon, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the half.
The Chargers had a 12-2 advantage in shots in the third quarter, but could not retake the lead as each team would score a goal in the frame. Sophomore
Chrissy Coffield (North Conway, N.H.) came away with her second goal of the season off an assist from Jones.
Less than three minutes later, the Falcons regained the one-goal advantage with a tally from Sophia Sousa (Dartmouth, mass.).
The Falcons added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter off the stick of Sophia Laperle (Auburn, Mass.). The team converted its second penalty corner of the game as Spadafore and Chloe Gladu (North Reading, Mass.) were credited with assists on the play.
Fitchburg State goalie Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.) turned away an impressive 20 shots. The Falcons also received a pair of defensive saves from senior Olivia Grant (Portsmouth, N.H.). Colby-Sawyer junior
Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) made six saves in the loss.
Colby-Sawyer had nine penalty corners, while the Falcons had two. Colby-Sawyer outshot Fitchburg State 29-11.
