Bella Robinson's 4th Quarter Goal Lifts Chargers Past NEC, 4-3

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 25, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team edged intrastate foe New England College, 4-3, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 4-4, after picking up a sixth-straight victory over the Pilgrims. The Chargers will resume Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Johnson & Wales. New England College drops to 4-3.  The Pilgrims host Anna Maria next Tuesday.

The Chargers scored twice in the first quarter on goals from senior Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine) and first-year Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.). Jones' goal came in the 5th minute when she ripped a shot from just inside the circle after Julia Lanctot (Sandown, N.H.) had inserted the penalty corner. Daly then scored at 10:22 on a one-timer from a pass by Bella Robinson (Saco, Maine).

NEC was able to answer in the second quarter with a pair of goals in a less than three minute stretch. Junior Zoe Pedler (Bunbury, Australia) was able to find the back of the cage after the Pilgrims took multiple shots in close. Brittany Tierney (Ottawa, Ontario) then tied the game at 19:00 with her team leading sixth goal.

Early in the third quarter, Jones scored her second goal of the game and sixth of the season to put the Chargers on top 3-2. Jones received a pass from senior Rachel Fisher (Lynn, Mass.) and sent a shot from just inside the circle past everyone.

The Pilgrims had the response, three minutes later, when Audrey Carr (Weare, N.H.) took a tough angle shot that found its way through the defenders and into the goal.

Bella Robinson notched the game-winning goal with her first tally of the season less than two minutes into the final quarter.

Colby-Sawyer goalie Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) made seven saves in the win, while Ellie Philben (Havre De Grace, Md.) had three stops for the Pilgrims. First-year Renee Bouchard (Swanton, Vt.) chipped in with a defensive save.

Each team took 12 shots, while Colby-Sawyer held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
