NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 13, 2019 – Colby-Sawyer sophomore
Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) became the ninth Charger to eclipse 1000 career assists in tonight's women's volleyball doubleheader. Colby-Sawyer defeated Salem State 3-0 and then rallied to earn a 3-2 victory over UMass Dartmouth.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 5-6. The Chargers will host a tri-match tomorrow against their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent of the season in the University of Saint Joseph and then UMaine Presque Isle.
Salem State drops to 0-4. The Vikings will have the rest of the weekend off and will begin Little East Conference (LEC) action on Tuesday at Worcester State.
UMass Dartmouth falls to 0-5. The Corsairs will return to action at home on Tuesday against Regis.
COLBY-SAWYER 3, SALEM STATE 0 – 25-14, 25-16, 25-17
Allen had 19 assists to achieve the 1000 assists milestone in just her second season. Senior
Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) led all attackers with 13 kills on .478 hitting. She added two solo blocks and a block assist. Sophomore
Riley Codman (Dublin, N.H.) hit .263 to finish with six kills. Senior
Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) registered a team best 13 digs.
Salem State received five kills from first-year Sarah Janco (Methuen, Mass.) and senior Haley Reed (Goffstown, N.H.). Janco hit .625 with five kills on eight attempts and no errors. Senior setter Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) finished with 16 assists, eight digs and a pair of aces. Junior Genevieve Kempster (Hopedale, Mass.) picked up a match best 15 digs to go with four aces.
COLBY-SAWYER 3, UMASS DARTMOUTH 2 – 14-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, 15-6
After sitting on a bus for a few hours in traffic on their journey north, which resulted in a delayed start, the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs came out with a lot of energy and cruised to a 25-14 first-set victory thanks to .417 hitting and 11 kills. They carried the momentum into the second set and edged the Chargers, 26-24, in a frame that featured 10 tied scores.
Colby-Sawyer then began to rally. With the third set at 13-12, the Chargers rattled off five-straight points to take a commanding 18-12 lead and went on for the 25-20 victory.
In the fourth set, Colby-Sawyer held a 20-12 lead, but UMass Dartmouth used an 8-0 run to tie the set at 20-20. The score was then tied at 21-21 when Colby-Sawyer received two
Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) kills and a pair of Corsairs attack errors to secure the 25-21 win and tie the match at 2-2.
The fifthset was all Colby-Sawyer. The home team took an 8-3 lead to force a timeout on the switchover and continued on to cruise to a 15-6 victory.
Naarah Cox was a force on both sides of the net for the Chargers and finished with 15 kills and four blocks.
Anna Allen registered 35 assists and 12 digs. She now has 1038 assists. Senior
Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) filled the stat sheet with nine kills, seven aces and 10 digs.
Morgan Flynn added a match high 26 digs. First-year players
Ava LaValle (Peabody, Mass.) and
Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) contributed six and five kills, respectively.
The Corsairs were led by a 14-kill effort from senior Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.). Senior libero Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) picked up a match best 28 digs, while senior Meghan Mullinax (Lake Balboa, Calif.) added 15. Senior setter Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) tallied 22 assists and eight digs. Sophomore Emma Aillet (Deer Park, Texas) was second on the team with seven kills.
