HENNIKER, N.H. - April 24, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team was defeated by intrastate rival New England College, 21-11, in a regular season contest Wednesday afternoon.
NEC improves to 11-5, while Colby-Sawyer dips to 10-6. The Chargers will compete in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) postseason tournament on Saturday. Matchups will be released on Thursday.
The Pilgrims received nine points from Tara Bainbridge. She tallied six goals and three assists. Alana Scott registered five goals and a game-high 10 draw controls.
Colby-Sawyer was led by
Grace Vosburgh's three goals. She added six ground balls.
Sarah Morin,
Sierra Schuster and
Jess Tattersall added two goals apiece.
Allison Piracini,
Bethany Fennessey and
Brittany Ireland each picked up seven ground balls. Ireland also scored once and had two assists to give her 63 for her career.
McKenzie Gallasso recorded 12 saves in the cage for New England College. Colby-Sawyer goalie
Kailyn Lapham had 15 saves and three caused turnovers. Lapham moved into sixth on the all-time saves list with 347.
The Chargers began the game with three-straight goals, two from Morin, in the first 8:25. NEC then scored the game's next five goals to take a 5-3 advantage with 14:33 left to play. After a Schuster goal pulled the Chargers to within one at 5-4, NEC finished the final 10 minutes of the half on a 5-0 run to lead 10-4 at the break.
Colby-Sawyer once again began a half with strong play and scored twice on a pair of goal assisted by
Shae-Lyn Walker. Alana Scott stopped the Colby-Sawyer run with her 52nd tally of the season, but the Chargers answered with three goals in four minutes to make the score 11-9 in favor of the home team.
Tara Bainbridge then scored three of NEC's next four goals to create separation at 15-9. Goals by Colby-Sawyer's Tattersall and
Brady Stolz pulled the visitors to within 15-11, but NEC posted six goals in the final 3:55 of the game to win 21-11.
