NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 10, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team was edged by Merrimack, of Division II, 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the Cedardale Health & Fitness Club.
Merrimack, which reached the Northeast-10 title match in the fall, improves to 12-7. Colby-Sawyer drops to 11-5. The Chargers will continue a three-match stretch against NE-10 schools with a home match on Sunday against Saint Anselm.
Playing under Division II rules, Merrimack won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 1 and No. 2 matches were closely played with the Warriors begin able to escape with the victories. Kristina Calistro and Rosemary Campanella edged sophomore
Yashu Yang (Kunming City, China) and first-year
Anna Kopituk (Morristown, Tenn.) at the top flight in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-1). At No. 2, Merrimack duo Cassie Restrepo and Mana Seifaei came away with a 7-5 victory over senior
Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and
Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.). Hope Salts and Mia Briggs defeated junior
Alexa Conlin (Westborough, Mass.) and senior
Hilary Boucher (Presque Isle, Maine) 6-1 for the Merrimack sweep.
The Warriors won singles matches at the No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 flights to account for their five points.
Colby-Sawyer got its two points with victories at No. 1 and No. 2.
Yashu Yang continued her great year and improved to 14-3 in singles matches. She outlasted Campanella at the top flight 6-2, 3-6, and 1-0 (11-9). Campenalla is 17-3 on the season, playing multiple spots, and had won her last 13 decisions.
Anna Kopituk earned a straight-sets win over Seifaei by a 6-4, 6-4 score.
