Balanced Attack Lifts Men's Volleyball Over NVU-Johnson

NEW LONDON, N.H. – March 6, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team defeated Northern Vermont University-Johnson, 3-0, in non-conference action Wednesday night. The Chargers won by scores of 25-19, 25-12, and 25-16.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-6 in its inaugural season. The Chargers will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at home tomorrow evening against Lasell at 7 p.m. Johnson falls to 0-13 and will travel to Nichols on Saturday for a tri-match against the Bison and Lesley.

Colby-Sawyer first-year Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) led all players with 10 kills and 10 digs. First-year Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) was second in the match with eight kills. Sophomore Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas) hit .600 to register seven kills. First-year AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) finished with 27 assists. Senior Aquiles Marcano (Lebanon, N.H.) contributed a pair of kills on three attempts.

Johnson received four kills from first-year Wyatt Moberg (Acton, Mass.) and junior Jesse Streeter (Richmond, Vt.). Moberg added seven digs, five assists and a block. Sophomore Ryan Willette (Wolfeboro, N.H.) led the Badgers with eight digs to go along with three kills and an ace.

The first set featured 12 ties and six lead changes. The Chargers trailed 15-13 and took a timeout. Colby-Sawyer then went on a 6-0 run, capped by a Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) kill, to take a 19-15 advantage. The Chargers were able to hold the lead for the rest of the set and won 25-19 after a Badger attack error.

The first few points of the second set went back and forth before the home team took a 12-6 lead, which resulted in a Johnson timeout. The Chargers never looked back and cruised to the 25-12 victory.

The third set was tied 3-3 before Colby-Sawyer used 9-3 run, capped by another Coffey kill, to force a Johnson timeout. The Chargers' lead increased to 19-9 after a Marcano kill. Johnson then went on a 5-1 spurt to cut the deficit to 20-14, but Colby-Sawyer staved off a comeback and secured the set with a Miller ace, 25-16.   

The Chargers hit. 253 for the match and held Johnson to .019.
