FRANKLIN, Mass. - February 9, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team split a pair of matches at Dean on Saturday. The Chargers defeated the hosts 3-0, but fell to Regis 3-0.
The match against Regis did not count towards the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings. The teams will meet again on February 27 and March 23 for matches that will count as conference contests.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 5-2, while Regis won two matches to improve to 3-4. Dean drops to 1-3. The Chargers will have some time off before hosting Johnson & Wales on February 19 for their first GNAC home match.
COLBY-SAWYER 3, DEAN 0 - 25-16, 25-18, 25-16
Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted a match-high 15 kills and 15 digs to lead the Chargers.
Eric Miller (LaGrange, Ill.) also reached double figures with 11 kills on .500 hitting.
AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) registered 29 assists.
Marc Flaherty (North Reading, Mass.) contributed 11 digs.
Dean was led by John Kauffman's nine kills and seven digs. Tywan Jones added five kills, while Holdjer DeCarvalho finished with four.
Colby-Sawyer hit .292 for the match. The team posted 15 kills and a .429 hitting percentage in the third set to help secure the 3-0 victory.
REGIS 3, COLBY-SAWYER 0 - 25-20, 25-16, 25-21
Orlando Plagata led the Chargers with nine kills and seven digs, while
Eric Miller finished with five service aces and four digs.
Matt Ferrara led the Pride with eight kills and eight digs. Kostea Andreenko finished with six kills on .500 hitting to go along with nine service aces.
Colby-Sawyer scored the first two points of the match, but Regis responded with a 14-4 scoring run. After the Chargers pulled to within four at 17-13, the Pride scored four straight points. Colby-Sawyer closed its deficit to four thanks to a 6-2 scoring run, but a bad set by the Chargers clinched the opening set for the Pride.
Regis opened an 8-3 lead in the second set, but Colby-Sawyer later scored four straight points to cut the Pride advantage to two at 14-12. Regis closed out the second set with an 11-4 scoring run.
In the third set, back-to-back service aces from
Eric Miller allowed the Chargers to take a 10-9 lead, but Regis went on a 12-3 scoring run, led by three aces from Andreenko, to open a 21-13 advantage. Colby-Sawyer once again rallied thanks to an 8-3 scoring run, led by a block and a service ace by
Zach Allen, but Regis forced the Chargers into a bad set to close out the match.
