BOSTON, Mass. - November 5, 2019 - The fifth seed Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team fell to fourth seed Suffolk, 3-0, in Tuesday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinal contest. The Rams won by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20.
Suffolk improves to 20-11 and advances to the semifinals to play top seed of Johnson & Wales. The Chargers end their season at 17-18.
Colby-Sawyer received a team best 10 kills from first-year
Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.). Senior
Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) was second on the team with five kills and added four block assists. She became one of four players in program history to reach 200 career block assists. Senior
Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) picked up 17 digs, while sophomore
Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs.
Hannah Fabiano led Suffolk with 14 kills and 12 digs. Kayla Barbera contributed 11 kills and eight digs. Harmony Johnson finished with 38 assists and nine digs. Stephanie Rheaume registered seven kills and three blocks.
The Chargers raced out to 5-2 lead, capped by a Cox kill, but three kills by Suffolk tied the score. After a service error gave Colby-Sawyer a one-point lead, the Rams responded with a 4-0 run and never looked back. The Chargers trailed 19-12, but showed fight and cut the deficit to three at 24-21 to force a timeout. Barbera ended the set in favor of the home team with a kill on the next point.
Suffolk began the second set with an 8-1 run and later led 11-4. The Chargers once again fought back with a 10-4 run with kills by six different players to trail 15-14. The teams traded the next several points as the Rams took a 21-18 lead. Suffolk was able to stave off a Colby-Sawyer comeback to take the second frame 25-20 with a Rheaume kill.
Colby-Sawyer scored the first point of the set for the third time in the match, but Suffolk quickly gained momentum to go in front 6-2. The Rams held a comfortable lead throughout most of the set. The Chargers chipped away late to make the deficit 23-19, but Suffolk scored two of the next three points to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
