NEW LONDON, N.H. – August 31, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team began the season with a 6-3 victory over Gordon at the Kelsey Tennis Courts.
The Chargers took a 2-1 advantage after doubles and clinched the match by winning four singles matches.
Senior duo
Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and
Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) put the Chargers on the board with an impressive 8-3 victory over Anne Carsey and Jordyn Maddex at No. 2 doubles. Gordon evened the match with an 8-4 win at No. 3 by Kaelyn Hall and Caitlin Kwok over junior
Alexa Conlin (Westborough, Mass.) and senior
Michelle Lopes (West Hartford, Conn.). Colby-Sawyer went in front 2-1 after sophomore
Yashu Yang (Kunming City, China) and freshman
Anna Kopituk (Morristown, Tenn.) outlasted Gabrielle Brucker and Justine Hanson at the top doubles flight, 8-5.
Colby-Sawyer's Yang won in straight sets at the top flight, while O'Connor defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.
Playing in her first collegiate match for Colby-Sawyer, Kopituk came away with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the No. 4 spot.
Senior
Hilary Boucher (Presque Isle, Maine) posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the sixth flight.
After dropping the first set 6-3, Carsey came back to win her No. 2 singles match with 6-3 and 10-5 scores in the second and third set. Hall also got a win for Gordon with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Colby-Sawyer (1-0) travels to Nichols on Sunday, while Gordon (0-1) will host Simmons on Monday at 1 p.m.
