Chargers Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Norwich, 17-11

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - March 5, 2018 - Trailing 8-7 at the half, the Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team outscored Norwich 10-3 in the second half to earn a 17-11 road victory on Monday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-1 after four-straight games against teams from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), the conference the Chargers will become full members of next year. The team will continue its lengthy road trip to begin the season on Friday with a 5 p.m. game at Worcester State. Norwich, which was selected to finish eighth in the GNAC Preseason Poll, falls to 0-1. The Cadets interim head coach is former Colby-Sawyer women's soccer standout Heather Faasse '15.

Nicole Lavigne paced the Chargers with six goals, while freshman Briana Couture added five tallies. Sierra Schuster recorded a hat-trick. Bailey Starr, Molly Mulcahy and Brittany Ireland added a goal apiece. Mulcahy also notched a game best three assists and moved into a tie for fifth in career helpers with Meredith Buzzi '03 with 41. Lavigne continued to climb the all-time ranks in career goals (177) and is one shy of third place held by Colby-Sawyer Hall of Famer Amy (Liner) Field '93 with 178.

Norwich opened the game with a goal, but the Chargers responded quickly and the back and forth action would ensue for the entirety of the first half. The team broke a tie with less than 30 seconds in the frame to take an 8-7 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Chargers came out firing and scored three straight goals in the first two minutes of action in what would be a precursor for the tone of the entire second half. Norwich was outscored 10-3 in the half, as Colby-Sawyer pulled away with the 17-11 victory.

Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.), Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md.), and Teresa Segreti (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) scored three goals apiece. Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist on the day, while Kathryn Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up her first career collegiate goal.
