Women's Lacrosse Edged by Southern Maine, 10-8

STANDISH, Maine - March 18, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team returned to action after a lengthy layoff  with a game against Southern Maine on a blustery Sunday afternoon. The Chargers fell to Southern Maine, 10-8, on the campus of Saint Joseph's College of Maine). 

Southern Maine evens its record to 2-2 and will host UMaine-Farmington on Wednesday at 4 p.m.. Colby-Sawyer dips to 3-2 and will play at Fitchburg State on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Tied 5-5 at halftime, Colby-Sawyer took a 6-5 edge when junior Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) converted a free-position attempt into her 14th goal of the season in the opening minute of the second half.  The lead lasted less than two minutes as sophomore Megan Violette (Portland, Maine) equalized for the Huskies after taking a pass from classmate Taylor Colangelo (Windham, Maine).

Rookie Briana Couture (South Hadley, Mass.) restored the lead to the Chargers converting a free-position attempt at 22:20.  Less than four minutes later, junior Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) scored for the Huskies to tie the game at 7-7.

Southern Maine regained the lead for good at 14:59 when Jordan hit rookie Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine) with a pass and Farley did the rest firing a shot past Colby-Sawyer sophomore goalie Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.). Jordan added a free-position goal at 11:13, and sophomore Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine) made it a three-goal advantage at 6:59 as the shot clock was winding down.

Junior Brittany Ireland (Amherst, N.H.) got one back for the Chargers with just under four minutes to play, but the visitors could get no closer.

Jordan led USM with five points on three goals and two assists. Irish also had three goals, and Violette had two goals. Junior goalie Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) recorded six saves to earn her second win of the season.

Schuster paced the Chargers with three goals, and Ireland scored twice. Lapham finished with 13 saves.
