PLYMOUTH, N.H. – October 24, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team fell to Plymouth State, 2-1, in Wednesday's regular season finale.
The Chargers dip to 6-7-2, but will host a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinal match on Saturday against Albertus Magnus. Plymouth State improves to 5-6-3.
The game's first good scoring opportunity came in the 26th minute, when Colby-Sawyer freshman
Mason Galbato (North Easton, Mass.) lined up a drive from 30 yards out to the top left corner, but goalkeeper Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) had it lined up.
PSU nearly broke through two minutes later. Julseth sent a free kick from 35 yards out along the right sideline into the box, but Rivera's attempt was denied by Colby-Sawyer goalie
Shane Sacks (Huntington Station, N.Y.).
The best chance for either team came in the 34th minute when Chargers' freshman
Ryan Kresco (Moultonborough, N.H.) collected a quick pass at the top of the 18, but his blast skimmed over the top of the crossbar.
PSU had a couple of chances late in the half. Freshman Milian Eklund (Akersberga, Sweden) had his one-timer denied in the 35th minute and Westbrook's turnaround shot in the final seconds sailed over the crossbar.
Freshman Alyosha Westbrook (Los Angeles, Calif.) put the home team on top in the 57th minute. Sophomore Erik Armskog (Gothenburg, Sweden) delivered a perfect corner to the back post, and Westbrook's header got past Sacks.
PSU doubled its lead six minutes later. Eklund intercepted a Chargers' pass near midfield, then sent a streaking Westbrook down the right side. As he approached the 18, Westbrook connected with an unmarked junior Cam Bunn (Melbourne, Australia) in the box, who headed it to the near post.
The Chargers got one goal back in the 86th minute. Sophomore
Dallas Robinson (Enfield, Conn.) delivered a corner to the far post where
Yannick Gonsalves (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) headed in his second goal of the season.
Sacks finished with seven saves for the Chargers, but dropped to 1-6-1, while Lindeberg improved to 3-6-0 after making four saves.
Plymouth State held an 11-9 edge in shots, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
