NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 27, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 victory over Gordon, on a hot and humid Wednesday afternoon.
The Chargers picked up their first win against the Fighting Scots since 2009. Gordon had won the previous six meetings.
Colby-Sawyer pushes its 2017 win streak to five games to improve to 6-1. The Chargers will resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday at Castleton in a matchup of the two remaining unbeaten conference teams. Gordon drops to 3-2-2 and will resume Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday at home against Curry.
The game-winning goal came off the foot of senior
Corrie Hoyt (Lebanon, Conn.) six minutes into the contest. After the Chargers were awarded a free kick, Hoyt took the chance from the left side, 30 yards out and sent a high bending ball towards goal. The Gordon keeper came out to make a play in traffic, but the ball took a big bounce over everyone and into the back of the net for Hoyt's first goal of the season.
The Chargers added a second goal less than five minutes into the second half. Sophomore
Molly MacLure (Westford, Mass.) snuck the ball into the upper right corner for her second tally of the season. Senior
Nell McQueeney (West Danville, Vt.) set up the play with an assist.
Colby-Sawyer sophomore goalie
Marissa Williams (Mattapoisett, Mass.) earned the shutout with several impressive saves. She finished with 11 stops in the win. Gordon keeper Kali Denty (Marshfield, Mass.) had four saves in the loss.
Gordon held a 20-11 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
