Women's Soccer Defeats New England College, 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 19, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team defeated New England College, 3-1, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Tuesday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the NAC. The Chargers will host Husson on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. New England College falls to 0-6-1 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Pilgrims will travel to New London, Conn. tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Mitchell.

In a rematch of last year's NAC title match, neither team could muster much offensive pressure resulting in a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes. Colby-Sawyer had a 6-4 edge in first half shots.

The action picked up in the second half with each side taking 12 shots.

Colby-Sawyer junior Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.) broke the drought in the 69th minute when she headed home a corner kick sent in by sophomore Molly MacLure (Westford, Mass.).

The home team doubled its lead less than three minutes later on a nifty through ball from junior Amanda Martin (Amesbury, Mass.) that set up a scoring chance for junior Hannah Fields (Shapleigh, Maine). Fields took a tough angle shot from the right side and snuck the ball just inside the far post for her fourth goal of the season.

The Pilgrims cut the deficit in half with 6:11 left to play. Junior Dawn Johnson (Farmingdale, N.Y.) sent a bending ball towards the box from 30 yards out that found the head of junior teammate Emily LePage (West Greenwich, R.I.). LePage was able to flick the ball into the far side of the goal past the dive of Colby-Sawyer keeper Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) to pull NEC within a goal at 2-1.

With less than a minute to play, Fields tacked on an insurance for Colby-Sawyer when she put back a rebound from her initial shot that was saved. The goal was Fields' team leading fifth of the season.

Mitchell finished the match with six saves to earn the victory, while NEC junior keeper Kayla Pugliese (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) stopped 10 shots.

The Chargers finished the contest with a 13-7 edge in shots on goal and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
