BRUNSWICK, Maine - May 12, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team earned a 6-0 victory over Bridgewater State in Friday's NCAA Tournament First Round.
In a rare occurrence in NCAA Tournament play, the Chargers reached six points to win the match after recording simultaneous victories.
Lauren Blanchard was approaching the net to shake her opponent's hand after a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the fifth flight while at the same time
Ashley Woodside was finishing a match clinching point to win her No. 1 singles contest 6-1, 6-0.
The Chargers improve to 17-5 and will play regional host and 8th-ranked Bowdoin on Saturday at noon.
The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team becomes the first program in school history to record NCAA Tournament wins in consecutive seasons. The team defeated UMass Dartmouth in last year's first round.
The Chargers swept doubles play and dropped just two games to Bridgewater State to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The top duo of
Ashley Woodside and
Maddy Gemerek swept Alisha Silva and Amanda Strickland, 8-0 to give Colby-Sawyer its first point. At No. 3,
Christine Hill and
Lauren Blanchard also won by an 8-0 score over Rachel Tarantino and Angelique Gray. The No. 2 tandem of
Evelyn Miller and
Aislinn O'Connor made it a sweep with an 8-2 result over Alison Scagnelli and Bojana Roman.
Aislinn O'Connor put the Chargers one point away with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 result at the fourth flight. O'Connor sets a new single season singles victories mark with 18 wins surpassing the 17 of teammate
Evelyn Miller set last year. O'Connor is also tied with Miller for total wins in a season with 37.
Lauren Blanchard moves into 7th in career doubles victories with 46.
