HENNIKER, N.H. - April 24, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped both ends of Monday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader at New England College. The Pilgrims won 11-4 and 8-1.
NEC improves to 16-18 overall and 8-10 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer falls to 18-14 overall and 10-8 in the conference. The teams will conclude the season series with a twin bill in New London on Wednesday.
GAME ONE: NEC 11, COLBY-SAWYER 4
The Pilgrims plated a run in the bottom of the first and pushed their lead to 6-0 in the third after an Evan Delaney (Hadley, Mass.) three-run homerun.
NEC would tack on five more runs in the fifth as they compiled Jeam Castillo (Lynn, Mass.), Joe Paliotte (Warwick, R.I.), and Manuel Alejandro (East Hartford, Conn.) all had RBI-singles and Lara plated a run on double-play attempt that got the out at second.
Colby-Sawyer scraped together four runs in the seventh but the comeback came up short with the final score favoring NEC, 11-4.
Andrew Pratt (New Sharon, Maine),
Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.),
Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) and
Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.) had RBIs in the frame.
Freshman Stanley Vargas (Boston, Mass.) scattered three hits and struck out five to earn his third win of the season. Jameson Carey (Amherst, Mass.) and catcher Alejandro both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Delaney finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.
Colby-Sawyer was led offensively by
Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.), who had two of the Chargers' five hits.
Jake Greaney (Groveland, Mass.) took the loss after six innings of work, while
Quincy Logan (Houston, Texas) threw a scoreless seventh inning.
GAME TWO: NEC 8, COLBY-SAWYER 1
Delaney gave the Pilgrims an early lead in game two with a grand slam to left-center in the first.
NEC added another run in the bottom of the fifth on an error.
Colby-Sawyer scored in the top of the sixth as
Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.) opened the inning with a single and came around on a triple by Unczur.
NEC used three hits and an error to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to the 8-1 victory.
Senior Vincent Backert (Shelton, Conn.) earned the win on the mound, scattering four hits over 6.2 innings before giving way to Kyle Bernier (Rochester, N.H.), who came in to get the final out of the game.
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) suffered the loss for Colby-Sawyer.
