WATERVILLE, Maine – April 29, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer and Thomas College baseball teams spilt a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games on Saturday afternoon at H. Allen Ryan Field. The Chargers won the first game 8-0, while Thomas took game two 6-5.
After today's games, The Terriers now sit at 5-31-1 (5-17 NAC) on the year while the Chargers remain in the third spot in the NAC at 19-15 (11-9 NAC). The two teams will play again on Sunday, April 30 with a start time at 12:00 p.m.
GAME ONE - Colby-Sawyer 8, Thomas 0
The Chargers opened the scoring in the top half of the second inning as
Doug Avellino singled to left, scoring
Andrew Pratt. They increased their lead in the next frame as a squeeze bunt from
Tim Donovan allowed
Justin Devoid to come in for an early 2-0 advantage.
Colby-Sawyer kept the bats alive in the fifth inning as Devoid reached on an error.
Brendan Thurber followed with a two-run homerun to left field to make it 4-0.
Four more runs were added in the sixth on RBI singles from Avellino and
Tim Unczur. Frongillo finished the scoring with his two-run homerun to left field, ending at 8-0.
Chris Mitchell Jr. silenced the Terrier offense with seven innings pitched, two hits, and no runs to move his record to 6-2.
Brandon Hubbard shouldered the loss for Thomas in five innings of work, eight hits, and five runs (four earned). Ryan Jurgiewich threw an inning in relief allowing three runs. Trevor Hinson threw the final inning with a 1-2-3 outing.
GAME TWO - Thomas 6, Colby-Sawyer 5
The Chargers pushed across three runs in the first inning.
Connor Henry plated the first two runs of the frame on a single up the middle. Thurber followed with an RBI ground out to bring in Devoid.
In the top of the third, Thurber ripped a double to left center to score Henry for a 4-0 lead.
Thomas looked to rally in the bottom of the fifth as Derek LeBlanc and Isaiah Arana reached on singles. Corbett followed his with first homerun of the game to right field to bring in three runs, cutting the lead down to one.
Colby-Sawyer added an insurance marker in the top of the seventh as an error on a double steal attempt allowed Devoid to come in.
Two costly errors in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Terriers to score a run and get runners in scoring position. Corbett sent another homerun to right field to walk-off for a 6-5 Thomas victory.
Corbett finished the game 3-for-4 with two homeruns and five RBI. Arana and Triston Pena each added two hits for the Terriers. Nate Martin earned the victory on the mound for Thomas throwing two-thirds of an inning and no hits.
Unczur and
Jackson Musco each had a multi-hit performance for the Chargers. Henry and Thurber both finished with a pair of RBI.
Ryan Glendye threw 6.1 innings, scattering nine hits, six runs (four earned), and nine strikeouts.
