Baseball Splits Twin Bill with UMF on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 23, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games with the University of Maine-Farmington on sunny Sunday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer won game one 2-1, while the Beavers took game two 12-3.

Colby-Sawyer goes to 18-12 overall and 10-6 in the NAC. The Chargers will play at New England College on Monday. UMaine-Farmington goes to 3-18 overall and 3-9 in the conference. The Beavers are slated to host a doubleheader against Husson on Tuesday.

GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 2, UMaine-Farmington 1

Colby-Sawyer starting pitcher sophomore Ryan Glendye (Litchfield, N.H.) set down the Beavers in order in the top of the first. The Chargers then began the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff double from junior Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) and a single from freshman Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.). Avellino then came around with the run on a double play to give Colby-Sawyer a 1-0 lead after one.

Senior Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H.) began the fourth inning for the Beavers with a double to right field. Four batters later, Leahy tied the game when he scored on a sac fly from junior Riley Chickering (Otisfield, Maine).

The Chargers benefited from a failed pickoff attempt in the bottom of the fourth with the eventual game-winning run. With junior Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) on first and senior Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.) on second, who both reached on singles, the UMF pitcher tried a pickoff play at first that sailed wide allowing each runner to move up two bases and scored Devoid.

Glendye improved to 4-2 with his fourth complete game of the season for Colby-Sawyer. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out six to give him a team best 30 strikeouts this season.
Devoid was the only player in the game to record two hits.

Leahy gave up two runs (one earned) in the complete game loss for the Beavers.

GAME TWO – UMaine-Farmington 12, Colby-Sawyer 3

The UMF offense scored five times in the first inning and never looked back. Junior Taylor Lockhart (Hallowell, Maine) had the big hit to begin the scoring with a two-run double to right field. Senior Trevor Hisler (Skowhegan, Maine), freshman Ryan Pratt (New Sharon, Maine) and junior Tyler Flayhan (Sanford, Maine) also had RBIs in the inning.

The Beavers added two more in the second on a Derek Bowen (Benton, Maine) and a sac fly from Jordan Croteau (South Paris, Maine).

Colby-Sawyer got three back in the bottom half of the second. Sophomore Austin Butler (Saunderstown, R.I.) knocked in junior Joey Fenuccio (Keene. N.H.) with a triple to deep left center. Butler then scored on a double steal.  Doug Avellino followed with single to right that scored senior Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.).

In the fourth inning, the visitors plated four more runs to take an 11-3 lead. Riley Chickering had a two-run double in the frame.

UMF scored one more run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch to take game two 12-3.

Sophomore Liam Datres de la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) led the Chargers with a pair of hits. Senior Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) had a hit in three at-bats. He now has 137 career knocks to tie him with Jon Clay '04 for seventh all-time.

UMF received five strong innings from freshman Gavin Arsenault (Dixfield, Maine) who improved to 1-2. He surrendered three runs on seven hits. Sophomore Patrick Fallon (South Berwick, Maine) did not allow a hit in the sixth inning, while senior Chad Snowman (Dixfield, Maine) pitched a perfect seventh inning to secure the win.

Junior Joe Ditullio-Dotto (Medford, Mass.) gave up an unearned run in 3.2 innings of hitless work for Colby-Sawyer.
