Baseball Opens Series against UMF with Two Wins

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 22, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team won the first two games of the four-game North Atlantic Conference series against the University of Maine-Farmington at nearby Kearsarge Regional High School on Saturday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer won 4-2 and 1-0.

The games were moved to North Sutton due to dense fog covering Kelsey Field making the conditions unplayable.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 17-11 overall and 9-5 in the NAC. UMaine-Farmington drops to 2-17 overall and 2-8 in the NAC. The teams will resume the series with another doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.

GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 4, UMaine-Farmington 2

The Chargers raced out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning. The rally began with a double from Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.) to lead off the frame. He then scored when junior Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) belted his second home run of the season over the center field fence. Later in the inning, junior Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) knocked in his team leading 19th RBI of the season on a groundout.

UMF got right back in the game by plating a pair in their next at-bat. Senior Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H.) began with an infield single and was followed by a bunt single from junior Jimmy Parks (Springvale, Maine). Both runners moved up on a balk and then were knocked in by a two-run single from freshman Derek Bowen (Benton, Maine). Bowen finished the game 3-for-4.

Colby-Sawyer added an insurance run in the fourth inning on a Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.) single to right that scored junior Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.).

After six strong innings from starting pitcher Chris Mitchell Jr. (Avon, Mass.), the Chargers called on sophomore Ryan Glendye (Litchfield, N.H.) for the save. He pitched around a walk and retired the side to record his third save of the season. Mitchell improved to 5-2 on the season.

Junior Nate Pushard (Auburn, Maine) tossed a complete game for UMF and was saddled with the loss. He gave up just two earned runs on seven hits and struck out three.

GAME TWO – Colby-Sawyer 1, UMaine-Farmington 0

The lone run of game two was scored by Colby-Sawyer in the bottom of the second. Connor Henry scored when sophomore Liam Datres de la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) reached on an error.

Each team received solid pitching performances that saw each hurler go the distance.

Senior Michael Fazio (Auburn, Mass.) gave up five hits and struck out five to record his second complete game of the season. He improved to 3-2 and lowered his ERA to 3.34.

UMF got six strong innings from junior Riley Chickering (Otisfield, Maine). He surrendered one unearned run on six hits.

Henry and senior Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) had two hits apiece for Colby-Sawyer.

Derek Bowen and Ethan Gouin (Sanford, Maine) added two hits for UMF.
