NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 20, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games with Lyndon on Thursday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer won the first game 6-5, while Lyndon took game two 5-2.
Prior to today's doubleheader, the teams continued a game from yesterday that was suspended due to rain. Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning when the game resumed, the Chargers came back with two runs in the seventh to win 4-3.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 15-11 overall and 7-5 in the NAC. The Chargers host UMaine-Farmington over the weekend for four games. Lyndon goes to 14-10 overall and 7-5 in the NAC. The Hornets host Husson for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend.
The Hornets are coached by 2014 Colby-Sawyer Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Tom White '09. The associate head coach is by former shortstop standout Greg Mehuron '12.
GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 6, Lyndon 5
Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first on an RBI grounder by senior
Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.) and a two-run double from junior
Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.).
The Chargers added a run in the fourth when junior
Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) beat out a grounder to third for a base hit that scored senior
Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.).
The home team pushed its lead to 6-0 with two more runs in the fifth. Thurber came around on an error, while Musco plated the second run with a sac fly to left field.
Lyndon made things interesting in the seventh with five runs on four hits and a couple of Colby-Sawyer miscues. Senior Nathan Stewart (Newport, Vt.) knocked in Lyndon's first run after reaching on an error. Two batters later, senior Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) had an infield single that scored freshman Codi Smith (Hartford, Vt.) who reached on a double. Stewart later scored on a throwing error. After a walk to Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, Conn.) chased Colby-Sawyer's starting pitcher, junior David Laroche (Franklin, Vt.) pulled the Hornets within one with a two-run single to left field. The rally would stop their as the next hitter flew out to right field to end the game.
Junior
Chris Hood (Manchester, N.H.) earned the win to improve to 3-0 for the Chargers. He went 6.2 innings and gave up one earned run on six hits. Junior
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) came in for his third save of the season.
Thurber went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Colby-Sawyer. Musco finished 1-for-1 with a pair of sacrifices. Avellino recorded his third straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort.
Sophomore Ben Rollins (Lincolnville, Maine) was saddled with the loss after four innings of work. He gave up three earned runs on nine hits. Junior Jake Jourdain (Becket, Mass.) pitched the final two innings and surrendered two runs (no earned) on one hit.
Rollins finished with three hits for the Hornets.
GAME TWO – Lyndon 5, Colby-Sawyer 2
Lyndon flipped the script in game two by scoring twice in the first inning. Devon Rollins came home on a double steal with the first run of the game. Later in the inning, junior Ryan Cordeiro (Rollinsford, N.H.) scored on a ground out by Andre Eason Jr.
The Chargers got one back in the second inning on another sac fly from
Jackson Musco that scored junior
Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.).
Eason responded with his own sac fly in the third. Later in the frame, Devon Rollins stole second and scored after a pair of throwing errors to give Lyndon a 4-1 lead.
The Hornets pushed their lead to 5-1 in the fourth on an RBI groundout from freshman Jake Perkins (Hartford, Vt.).
In the fifth inning,
Justin Devoid had an RBI single to center to give the Chargers their second run of the game to make the score 5-2, but that would be as close at the game would get.
Junior Neil Robinson (Stoddard, N.H.) was credited with the win for Lyndon after 2.1 innings of relief. He gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out two. Junior Andrew Whalen (Cumberland, R.I.) pitched two perfect innings of relief to earn his league leading eighth save of the season.
Five different Chargers accounted for the five hits in the game. Senior
Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) pushed his career total to 134, passing Kris Ramsay '08 for 8th all-time.
Senior
Jake Greaney (Groveland, Mass.) tossed a complete game for Colby-Sawyer and gave up just three earned runs on seven hits.
