Baseball Drops Two to Castleton

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 17, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped both ends of Monday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader with Castleton. The Spartans won 10-5 and 7-1 to earn the four-game split with Colby-Sawyer after the Chargers won a pair last week in Castleton, Vermont.

Castleton improves to 17-5 overall and 8-2 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer drops to 12-10 overall and 4-4 in the NAC. The Chargers will continue a busy week on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Lyndon.

GAME ONE – Castleton 10, Colby-Sawyer 5

Colby-Sawyer jumped in front 2-0 in the bottom of the third after an RBI single from junior Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) who came around on an RBI double from freshman Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.).

The Chargers added a third run in the fourth on a run-scoring single from junior Tim Donovan (Litchfield, N.H.).

Castleton erased the deficit with five runs in the fifth. Senior Zach Bahan (Shaftsbury, Vt.) had the big hit in the frame with a single to left that scored a pair of Spartans. He later came around on a Matt Jackson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) single to center.

The Spartans plated three more runs in the sixth after Dillon Benham (Lenox, Mass.) knocked in a pair and Bahan added his third RBI of the game to put the visitors on top 8-3.

Each team would add two runs in their half of the seventh inning to finish the game in favor of Castleton, 10-5.

Avellino, Unczur, senior Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) had two hits apiece for Colby-Sawyer.

Benham went 4-for-4 with three RBI for the Spartans. Bahan also finished with three RBI.

Steven Jurkiewicz (Essex Junction, Vt.) earned the complete game victory for Castleton, while Chris Mitchell Jr. (Avon, Mass.) suffered the loss for Colby-Sawyer.

GAME TWO – Castleton 7, Colby-Sawyer 1

Nathan Frongillo opened the scoring for Colby-Sawyer in the bottom of the first with a single that scored Doug Avellino.

Castleton would break through in the fourth with a pair of runs on a double from Dylan Bailey (Duxbury, Vt.) and a single from Pat Mumford (Chippenhook, Vt.).

The Spartans scored twice more in the fifth after Davis Mikell (Williston, Vt.) knocked in Zach Bahan with a double. Mikell then scored on another RBI hit from Bailey.

After a runner was granted home on a balk in the sixth to give Castleton a 5-1 lead, the Spartans put two more across in the seventh for the 7-1 victory. Mikell homered over the right field fence, while Bailey picked up his third RBI of the game on a groundout later in the frame.

Frongillo finished with a pair of hits to give him 129 for his career to tie Ryan Wiley for 11th all-time.

Senior Michael LaBeau (Bellows Falls, Vt.) earned the complete game victory for Castleton. He gave up one run on seven hits and struck out three.

Colby-Sawyer senior Michael Fazio (Auburn, Mass.) took the loss after pitching the first six innings. Senior Jake Greaney (Groveland, Mass.) gave up one hit in an inning of relief for the Chargers.
