NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team continued its spring schedule with a 7-2 triumph over Smith College on Wednesday evening. Doubles action took place inside before the weather cleared for outside singles play.
The Chargers improve to 14-4 and will play two more matches next weekend before traveling to Latham, N.Y. on May 7 for the NAC/NEAC Crossover Championship. Smith falls to 5-12 and will finish its season on Friday against Johnson & Wales.
Colby-Sawyer won two of three doubles matches with victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
Evelyn Miller and
Aislinn O'Connor combined for their 15th win this season by defeating Emma Essenmacher and Kara Van Allen, 8-2. At No. 3,
Christine Hill and
Lauren Blanchard edged Christine Yee and Leigh Johnston, 8-6, for their 16th win as partners. Smith earned a point by winning the top doubles match 8-3.
The Chargers cruised in singles play by winning five of six matches.
Ashley Woodside earned a point after her opponent retired during the first set.
Maddy Gemerek, O'Connor, Blanchard and Hill each won their singles matches in straight sets to lift Colby-Sawyer to a 7-2 victory.
Margaret Anne Smith was able to comeback for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win at No. 2 for the Pioneers' lone singles point.
