Baseball Takes Two at Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. - April 12, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team snapped Castleton's eight-game winning streak by winning both ends of today's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader. The Chargers won 2-1 and 2-0.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the NAC. The team will step out of conference for a 3:30 p.m. single game at Daniel Webster on Thursday. Castleton falls to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in the NAC. The Spartans will play four against UMaine-Farmington this weekend.

GAME ONE - Colby-Sawyer 2, Castleton 1

The first three innings were scoreless, despite each team recording a pair of hits. Colby-Sawyer finally broke the tie with a run in the top of the fourth. Senior Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.) started the rally with a walk. He then moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single by junior Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.).

The Chargers doubled the lead in the top of the fifth on a Castleton miscue. With two outs in the inning and two men on, junior Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) and freshman Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) took off to steal second and third. Both runners reached safely, but a wayward throw allowed Avellino to score for Colby-Sawyer.

Castleton's biggest threat came in the bottom of the sixth. The frame began with a Deagan Poland single. Jonathan Lindau followed with a walk and then both runners advanced on a wild pitch. The Spartans then loaded the bases after Davis Mikell took ball four. The home team was able to get on the scoreboard with a sac fly from Zach Bahan, which scored Poland. The next batter then reached with a walk to load the bases once again. The Chargers were able to get out of the jam with a groundout and take a 2-1 lead into the seventh where they closed the game.

Each pitcher went the distance in a well-played game by both team. Senior Chris Mitchell Jr. (Avon, Mass.) gave up one run on four hits and struck out five to earn his conference leading fourth win of the season. Davis Mikell suffered his first loss of the season after surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits. Mikell struck out 10 Chargers.

Matt Jackson had a pair of hits to lead the Spartans.

GAME TWO - Colby-Sawyer 2, Castleton 0

The second game began with four scoreless innings before Colby-Sawyer plated a run in the top of the fifth. Doug Avellino got the line moving with a single and a stolen base. Tim Unczur then singled, sending Avellino to third to set up an RBI opportunity for senior Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.). Frongillo delivered with an RBI groundout to shortstop to put Colby-Sawyer in front 1-0.

The visitors put their second run on the board in the top of the sixth on a sac fly from junior Tim Donovan (Litchfield, N.H.) that scored junior Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.). Henry led-off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a ground out and then to third on a fielding error.

The reigning NAC Pitcher of the Week, senior Michael Fazio (Auburn, Mass.), threw the first five innings and scattered three hits to earn his second straight win for the Chargers. Sophomore Ryan Glendye (Litchfield, N.H.) closed the game with two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second save of the season.

Steven Jurkiewicz suffered his first loss after tossing a complete game. He gave up one earned run on seven hits and struck out four.

Henry, Unczur and Avellino each finished with a pair of hits for Colby-Sawyer.
