NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 21, 2017 – Freshman
Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) had 17 points and 10 assists to lead the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team to a 79-55 victory in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinals at the Hogan Sports Center on Tuesday evening.
Colby-Sawyer (18-8) will travel to Bangor, Maine to play top seed Husson University on Friday, February 24 at 6 p.m. in the NAC semifinals. The other semifinal will feature second seed Castleton versus the winner of No. 3 New England College and No. 6 Johnson State. Maine Maritime falls to 14-12.
Hamilton also finished with five rebounds and four steals. Senior
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) was 5-of-7 from the floor to finish with 17 points. Junior
Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) contributed 12 points, while freshman
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench.
Maine Maritime received a game best 26 points from sophomore Alyane Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.). She added seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) added eight points and eight rebounds. Freshman Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine) contributed seven points.
The Mariners opened the game with a bucket from Felix, but then Colby-Sawyer scored 11 straight points capped by a Hamilton trey. Maine Maritime clawed back and pulled within four at 16-12 after a Felix free throw with 3:29 left. The margin would stay at four at the end of the frame in favor of the home team, 20-16. The Chargers scored 11 of their 20 points in the quarter on eight Maine Maritime turnovers.
The Chargers pushed their lead back to nine on two occasions early in the second after layups from
Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) and
Ally Mignault (Billerica, Mass.). The Mariners kept the game close with strong play from Felix, who scored 12 points in the second. Colby-Sawyer scored the final three points of the half on a Calvo jumper and a Hamilton free throw to take a 39-34 lead at the break.
Colby-Sawyer pulled away in the third by winning the quarter 17-6. Iannone scored eight points in the frame for the Chargers, while the defense held Maine Maritime to 3-of-17 shooting. The home team led 56-40 after the third.
The Chargers held a double-digit lead for the entire fourth quarter en route to the 79-55 victory. Colby-Sawyer knocked down 12-of-15 free throws in the final quarter.
