FARMINGTON, Maine - February 11, 2017 - Senior
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) scored 16 points to lead the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team to a 54-50 road win at Thomas College on Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers won their fourth straight game and earned the season sweep over Thomas to improve to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer will travel to Henniker next Saturday for a pivotal regular season finale against New England College. Thomas drops to 7-16 overall and 4-12 in the conference.
Iannone went 7-of-12 to be the only Charger in double figures. Freshmen
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) and
Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) chipped in eight points apiece. Senior
Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) had seven rebounds and six steals.
Thomas was led by Karli Stubbs' 16 points. She went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and added a free throw. Amira Jones reached double figures with 12 points and six rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
Midway through the first quarter, Colby-Sawyer's offense took over as they opened up a 13-2 advantage. Iannone, Hamilton, and
Ally Mignault each added four points in the first for a 15-8 lead on 7-of-16 (43.8%) shooting. Thomas struggled from the floor in the opening frame at 3-for-13 (23.1%) and turned the ball over 12 times.
Shooting woes and turnovers continued for the Terriers in the second as the Chargers entered halftime with a 29-20 lead. Four points from Stubbs and Jones kept the Terriers within distance. Iannone paced Colby-Sawyer with eight points in the first half on 4-of-7 shooting.
With 4:33 remaining in the third, the Terriers found themselves within four as Stubbs knocked down her second three-pointer of the quarter to trail 34-30. Sammie Griffin hit a three of her own just under two minutes later to bring the Terriers within one. The Chargers added two buckets at the end of the quarter for a 42-35 lead.
Late in the fourth, Iannone extended the Colby-Sawyer lead to ten with 3:03 remaining. Thomas answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to three in the final minute, but Hamilton hit four key free throws in the last ten seconds to finish the scoring at 54-50.
