Women's Soccer Has Win Streak Snapped by Plymouth State, 3-2

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 4, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team had its six-game win streak snapped by Plymouth State, 3-2, at Kelsey Field Wednesday afternoon.

Plymouth State improves to 4-5 and will resume Little East Conference (LEC) action on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. home match against Keene State. Colby-Sawyer drops to 7-2 and will return to North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a Saturday contest at Lyndon at 1 p.m.

The Chargers scored the lone goal of the first half in the 34th minute. Junior Morgan Keene (Barre, Vt.) used her body to direct a cross from junior Hannah Fields (Shapleigh, Maine) into the back of the net for her second tally of the season.

Plymouth State had a great chance to get the equalizer with four minutes to go in the first frame when freshman Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) broke away from the Colby-Sawyer defenders for a one-on-one with the goalie. Lloyd tried a low shot to her left, but was denied by the sprawling Marissa Williams (Mattapoisett, Mass.) to keep the Chargers in front 1-0 at the half.

The Panthers knotted the game less than 10 minutes into the second stanza when Lloyd sent a cross into the box that was volleyed into the corner of the net by sophomore Amy Luther (Westerly, R.I.).

The home team regained the lead 12 minutes later on a similar play to Plymouth's first goal. Fields sent a pass to sophomore Molly MacLure (Westford, Mass.) who struck the airborne ball into the upper left side of the goal.

The one goal advantage was short-lived as Mallory Lloyd tied the contest five minutes later. Sophomore Caitlin Catania (Billerica, Mass.) sent a cross towards the box that was deflected by teammate Sabrina Sweeney (Raymond, N.H.) to the foot of Lloyd who finished her seventh goal of the season.

Colby-Sawyer thought they had taken the lead a couple of minutes later when Keene sent a bending ball towards goal from a tough angle, but the shot caromed off the far post.

Lloyd then gave the visitors their first lead of the contest in the 82nd minute with her team leading eighth tally of the year. After a failed clear attempt, Lloyd launched a shot from 18 yards that snuck in under the crossbar for the eventual game-winning goal.

Plymouth State keeper Leandra Nault (Goffstown, N.H.) had six saves in the win, while Williams finished with five stops for Colby-Sawyer.

Colby-Sawyer finished the match with advantages in shots (21-14) and corner kicks (9-3). Each team had eight shots on target.
