Men's Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale to Plymouth State, 3-2

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 25, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer College men's soccer team fell to Plymouth State, 3-2, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the Sally Shaw Veitch Track and Turf Field.

Plymouth State improves to 6-9 and will conclude its regular season at home on Saturday against Rhode Island College. The Chargers drop to 10-6 and will host a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinal contest on Wednesday, November 1 against either Thomas College or Maine Maritime Academy.

Colby-Sawyer opened the scoring in the 30th minute when junior Noah Camelo (Marblehead, Mass.) headed a bouncing ball past the Panthers keeper.

The visitors tied the match with less than two minutes to play in the half off the foot of Erik Ljunglof (Orebro, Sweden). After the Chargers were whistled for an offside, Plymouth State keeper Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) took the free kick. He sent the ball towards the box that was flicked on by senior Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) to Ljunglof who finished the chance.

The Panthers came out of the halftime break with a bit more pace and converted on their early scoring chances to take a lead. Rutherford scored twice in a five-minute span to give Plymouth State a 3-1 lead, a third of the way through the half.

Colby-Sawyer was able to pull within a goal in the 74th minute, but could not find an equalizer. Senior Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) set up senior teammate Jake Sykes (Laconia, N.H.) with a pass that split a pair of defenders leading to a breakaway. Sykes took possession and fired a shot into the cross corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season. The assist was Sexton's team leading 11th of the season.

Lindeberg finished with five saves in the victory. Sophomore Jarod Parkins (North Kingstown, R.I.) made seven saves for Colby-Sawyer.

Plymouth State had an 18-11 advantage in shots, while Colby-Sawyer held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
