NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of the 2017-18 schedule last weekend at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament held at Mount Holyoke College and Smith College.
The way the tournament works is that each institution places a tandem in a Flight to compete against others. The pair plays a doubles match and then each player competes in a singles match for a possible three points. The team that wins at least two of the three matches advances to the next round.
Highlighting the weekend for the Chargers was the tandem of
Alexa Conlin and
Hilary Boucher. The duo won Flight D to become the first Chargers to take home a title at NEWITT. Conlin and Boucher won all three of their doubles matches against Wheaton, Springfield and Smith. Boucher won three singles matches, while Conlin earned a pair of victories. The duo swept Wheaton 3-0 to advance to the semifinals against Springfield, which they also beat 3-0. In the finals, Conlin and Boucher earned an 8-5 doubles win to take a 1-0 lead. Boucher then won her singles match 6-1, 7-6 (3). Conlin was edged in a tight match 6-2, 5-7, 13-11, but the Chargers got the required two points to win the flight.
Playing some of the toughest competition in the region, several other Chargers came away with impressive wins over the weekend.
Ashley Woodside and
Yashu Yang competed in Flight A and earned doubles wins against MIT and Wheaton. Yang added a singles win against Wheaton.
Aislinn O'Connor picked up a singles victory over Babson in Flight B.
In Flight C,
Lauren Blanchard and
Michelle Lopes teamed for a victory over Springfield in the first round. Blanchard added a singles win to advance the team to the second round where the duo fell to Brandeis. With the win, Blanchard moved into sole possession of third on the all-time wins list with 108 behind teammate
Ashley Woodside (113) and
Ashlyn Ramsay '16 (128).
