Strong Second and Third Quarters Propel Women's Basketball to 71-58 Win at Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. - January 7, 2017 - Junior Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to lift the Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team to a 71-58 victory at Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer has won four straight to improve to 9-3. The Chargers will resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Thursday when they travel to Castleton. Fitchburg State drops to 5-5.

Calvo led the Chargers with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Freshman Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) scored five points and collected a career best 10 assists. Senior Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, while senior Ally Mignault (Billerica, Mass.) also was close to a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Freshman Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) added 10 points in 13 minutes off the bench.

The Falcons received a game best 39 points on 14-16 shooting from Kyra Rose. She went 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Melissa Gugielmello was the second leading scorer on the team with six points in five minutes off the bench.

After struggling to find the range on offense in the first quarter and getting outscored 19-9, the Chargers flipped the script in the second and third frames.

Trailing 21-10 early in the second, the Chargers went on a 15-2 run with three points coming from Hammilton, junior Alex Danas (Middletown, Conn.) and Calvo for the 25-23 lead. The two teams traded baskets to close out the half with Calvo and Sugars netting the buckets for Colby-Sawyer, while Rose collected both baskets for the Falcons as the Chargers took a 31-29 margin into the break.

Colby-Sawyer carried the momentum into the third and went in front 37-29 as senior Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) hit a pair of jumpers, while Mignault added a layup. The Chargers ended the third quarter with a 53-40 lead following a layup by Sugars with just under a minute remaining in the frame.

The Chargers shot over 52% in each quarter, scored 22 points and held Fitchburg State to less than 25% shooting in that span.

The visitors eventually pushed the lead to 17, before the Falcons pulled within nine, but that was as close as the home team would get as the game ended in favor of Colby-Sawyer, 71-58.

The Chargers outrebounded the Falcons 49-44 with 19 caroms coming on the offensive glass, which led to a 21-3 advantage in second chance points.
