Women's Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Johnson State, 74-56

JOHNSON, Vt. – January 3, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to earn a 74-56 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory at Johnson State on Tuesday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the NAC. The Chargers will step out of conference on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game at Fitchburg State. Johnson State falls to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference action. The Badgers will host UMaine-Farmington on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Lexi Iannone scored 12 points and made a pair of three-pointers to move into sole possession of eighth place in career threes with 135.

Amanda Calvo led five Chargers in double figures with 14 points. She added a career-high nine rebounds. Lexie Hamilton had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Emmani Robinson and Ally Mignault added 10 points apiece. Kristin Ellis grabbed a game best 12 rebounds.

The Chargers began the game with a 10-2 run capped by a Lexi Iannone layup. Johnson State responded with a 12-3 spurt to take a 14-13 lead with 2:21 left in the quarter. An Alex Danas three-pointer and a Tianna Sugars layup put Colby-Sawyer in front 18-14, but the Badgers pulled within one after a Kaitlyn Brouard trey ended the first quarter.

The second quarter featured back and forth action with multiple ties and lead changes. With the Chargers in front 33-27 with a minute to play, Johnson State rattled off the final six points of the half to make the game tied at 33-33 heading into halftime. Eight different Chargers scored in the first half.

Colby-Sawyer then pulled away by outscoring the Badgers 26-12 in the third quarter behind 11-of-17 shooting and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Iannone had eight the in the quarter including a pair of threes to move her up the all-time list.

The Chargers secured the victory with a 15-11 score in the fourth quarter holding Johnson State to 25% shooting.

Colby-Sawyer outrebounded the Badgers 54-32.
