BANGOR, Maine - January 28, 2017 - Colby-Sawyer junior
Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) scored a career best 27 points, but the Chargers fell at Husson, 90-71, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer falls to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the NAC. The Chargers will host Castleton on Tuesday. Husson remains perfect in conference action at 12-0 and improves to 16-1 overall.
Calvo was 11-23 from the floor and 5-8 from beyond the arc to lead all players in scoring. She added six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Senior
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) was the only other Charger to reach double figures with 10 points. She made a pair of three-pointers to give her 150 career makes and tie her with Lisa Cole '06 for seventh all-time.
Husson was led by a 24-point effort from Darla Morales. Chandler Guerrette made 7-of-10 field goal attempts to score 18 points. Sami Ireland chipped in 13 points in 17 minutes off the bench.
In a high scoring first quarter, the Chargers held a 13-7 lead 2:35 into the frame after a Calvo jumper. Husson then turned up the offensive pressure and ended the quarter on a 22-7 run capped by four points from Ireland to give the home team a 29-20 lead.
The Eagles were able to hold a comfortable lead throughout the second quarter and headed into halftime with a 52-34 lead.
Colby-Sawyer has used the third quarter to its advantage this season to either come from behind or pull away from its opponents. Today was no different as the Chargers outscored Husson 20-12 to pull within 64-54 heading into the fourth. Calvo hit three three-pointers in the third.
Kristin Ellis opened the fourth with a bucket to bring the Chargers within eight points. Midway through the fourth, a pair of
Lexie Hamilton free throws closed the gap to six points at 71-65. The teams traded a basket and then Husson went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to create separation at 85-67 and went on for the 90-71 victory.
Both sides shot the ball well from beyond the arc - Colby-Sawyer 43.7%, Husson 47.1% - but the Eagles made 22 free throws to Colby-Sawyer's 10.
